New to Yoga

If you are new to yoga and meditation, been away from your practice for awhile, or recovering from physical situations, you will love this class. It’s a teaching class to get you into proper form. You will learn all about the philosophy of yoga, connect with your breath, relax, de-stress, and feel nourished. Each class includes a meditation practice. Science shows people who meditate are happier, healthier & have more intelligence than those who do not.

New to Yoga is the place to begin. A common question is how many New to Yoga classes should you take before moving into another style? Many people stay with New to Yoga for life because they love the gentle stretch and benefits to the mind. Three to six classes is advised before moving on to more advanced classes.

Hatha & Gentle Hatha Yoga

All yoga is a derivative of Hatha Yoga. “Ha” means “sun” and “tha” means moon. Hatha yoga is a balanced approach to integration of the solar and lunar channels of the body. It’s an exploration in the duality of the mind. You will experience movement, breathwork, and right messaging based in the 8 limbs of yoga. Some Hatha classes add one pointed focus, withdrawing the sense, and meditation taking Hatha yoga to a new level…the Royal Path of yoga or Raja Yoga. Expect long holds and strength building. Most classes end with meditation.

The difference between Hatha and gentle Hatha is simply the transitions. Hatha yoga will include planks and push ups with lots of moving legs forward and back. In Gentle Hatha Yoga we skip the hard transitions that require a build up of strength and spend more time stepping back into poses which is much easier. It can still be challenging as the other principles of Hatha yoga apply.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Vinyasa means “composition” and in yoga is treating the body as a vessel for the breath. Each breath is linked with movement. An inhale brings the arms up to the sky, an exhale brings the hands to the earth. Just sit and feel yourself breath for a minute and imagine putting that breath with movement. You’d be moving pretty fast, right? In Vinyasa, yoga becomes a dance of sorts.

Generally, the class starts with a warm up on the hands and knees and then moves to standing and a sequence of Sun Salutations. Even in a hatha class, you are going to Vinyasa through Sun Salutations. The class can be quite challenging and is a work out so if you are new to yoga, you will experience learning curve of 5 – 7 times until you know the routine which varies a bit from teacher to teacher.

The great news is it is not as complicated as learning to dance! Vinyasa can be slow, gentle, fast, or hot so if you are newer, pick slow or gentle.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is a very unique form of yoga taught by Pamela from time to time. Each class begins by calling in the four directions and setting an intention for the practice. This is usually followed by breathwork and then a warm up before you move into a “kriya.” A kriya is a designated set of postures designed to elicit a very specific effect in the body, mind, or spirit. After you kriya, you will lie down for a rest.

When you sit up you will experience a meditation of 3 – 31 minutes depending on the class. The meditations generally involve sitting in easy pose (see the image), placing your hands in a certain way, and focusing on various points of the body, movements of the body, breath, music, or mantra and sometimes all of those.

Kundalini yoga can be quite difficult. The good news is if you find you can’t do a pose or hold it for the specified time, you simply imagine you are in the pose, try to stay with the breath, and you still receive the benefit. We call it “leaning in the right direction.” Energetically, Kundalini is the creative force of the universe or the Shakti.

You will find Kundalini offered as a special class and not regularly scheduled. Pamela is a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher since 2013 taught by Gurmukh of Golden Bridges. Pamela does not adhere to the teachings of Yogi Bhajan.

Yin Yoga

Yang is the masculine, the solar, or the energetic energy of the universe. Yin is the feminine, lunar, or more passive energy of the universe. In a Yin class you will begin with a warm up and then move to poses more hip focused. You will use props as needed to make yourself comfortable as you hold your poses for 3 – 6 minutes. These poses are on the floor so you are not standing in a pose for 3 – 6 minutes. You are seated, propped, and comfortable.

It differs from restorative in that the poses are more difficult and more active, yet you are still relaxing and resting into the poses. If you would like to make your standing practice much more fluid and easy, this class is a must do once a week. It opens the toes, feet, ankles, knees, and especially the hips.

Energetically, we store karma and toxicity in the hips. Your hip is your largest joint with the most connective tissue to soften and mold.

This class is generally dimly lit with candles. You feel soft and pliable when you leave.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is a style of yoga that encourages physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. Appropriate for all levels, restorative yoga is practiced at a slow pace, focusing on long holds, stillness, and deep breathing. Benefits of this practice include:

  • Deeply relaxes the body.
  • Stills a busy mind.
  • Releases muscular tension, improving mobility and flexibility.
  • Improves capacity for healing and balancing.
  • Balances the nervous system.
  • Boosts the immune system.
  • Develops qualities of compassion and understanding toward others and self.

Tai Chi

An art embracing the mind, body and spirit – Originating in ancient China, tai chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and soon delivers its health benefits. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey.
