Yesterday I sat at the kitchen counter watching my daughter meticulously clean a pickle jar of it’s label.  She sat down with markers and duct tape and began creating her own label.  About half way through the process of thinking of synonyms for the word “good”, I realized that this was actually odd behavior and curious, asked her what she was doing.

One of her teachers at school assigned to all the kids for the year 2014 the task of creating a “good” jar.  This is a jar you keep by your bedside.  Every evening you write down on a scrap of paper one good thing that happened to you that day.

Cute, huh?  It occurred to me that his doesn’t just have to be a “good” jar, it could be a jar of any of the following you are trying to manifest or heal in your life:

Jar types:

  • Gratitude
  • Prayer/Wishes
  • Accomplishments/Successes
  • Things that made you laugh
  • Things you wish to release

Or perhaps it could simply be a hodgepodge jar of all the above.  The idea is at the end of the year, you could pull out the bits of paper and review your year.  Sitting here in at the end of 2013 and trying to do my personal look back, I wish I had kept better track of my year.

If the jar idea just doesn’t appeal to you, it wouldn’t be such a big deal to place a notebook by your bedside and simply write a daily note before your head hits the pillow.  It doesn’t have to be a big deal or some heart wrenching experience.  Just write down a sentence.  It’s really that easy.

Why?  Well, there are actually proven health benefits to expressing gratitude and keeping a journal.  It makes you happy.
